Allamagoosalum
Bag of BonesAllamagoosalum is a boogeyman or demon from Kyra’s childhood fears, invoked when the magnetic letters she had been given go missing. Its importance lies less in any confirmed appearance than in the way a frightening name turns an ordinary loss into a nocturnal, supernatural story.
Name and Background
Mattie explains that Allamagoosalum is a corruption of a Micmac word for boogeyman or demon. She identifies the name as another legacy of Kyra’s grandfather, linking the creature to the fears Kyra had acquired in that family context. Mattie says Kyra had many nightmares about demons, wendigos, and the allama-goosalum from late winter into spring.
The Missing Letters
When the magnetic letters disappear, Mattie says she asked Kyra what had happened to them. Kyra began crying and said that Allamagoosalum had taken them, eating them as a midnight snack while everyone else slept. The explanation makes the creature a vivid agent in Kyra’s imagination, while the scene leaves the letters’ actual fate unverified.
Narrative Significance
The episode joins a child’s distress to the story’s recurring uncanny atmosphere without establishing that Allamagoosalum physically exists. The lost letters are an everyday object, but Kyra’s account recasts their absence as an act by a demon-like figure; Mattie’s explanation, meanwhile, places the fear within a learned vocabulary of nightmares. The creature therefore functions as both a source of childhood terror and a name through which Kyra makes sense of something upsetting that she cannot explain.
